Greening Events

There are many ways to eliminate waste while creating a cost-effective and enjoyable event. Greening events requires a systems wide approach, and aims to leave only a positive trace while decreasing your impact on the planet.

I have served in various capacities for greening events, from being the director of greening, to sorting and general green strategist.



Greening process


I provide four tiers of green event consulting:

1. Going Green
Basic = Waste Management and recovery process. Coordinate recycling, composting, and transportation of green waste. Provide signage.

 

2. Vending
Waste recovery services plus work with the food vendors to become responsible and conscious venders in using reusable or bio-degradable wear- made from natural fibers.

 

3. The Whole Gamut
Oversee event greening process through all aspects of the event and internal operations from procurement, ticketing, paper use, hotel correspondences, food sourcing, power supply, carbon offsetting, etc. Also serve as an on-site resource and share information at the event on sustainable sourcing.

 

4. Organization Development
Work with the event planners in best practices and decision making process for becoming more sustainable.




Events Greened

Burning Man
45,000+ person week-long event in the Nevada desert

  • Green Team Initiator, Project Management & Volunteer Coordinator for Greening Burning Man, 3 year project

Project detail:

  • Research & Development: Coordinated gathering resources for the Environmental page of the Burning Man website: http://www.burningman.com/environment/ Educational resources included: Grey water, potable water, biofuels, composting, energy, leave no trace guidelines, lighting, recycling, transportation, waste, and ways to take action, get involved, and volunteer
  • Led regional greening movements and greening of regional Burning Man events,
  • Created a Template for how to Green Events: LA Decom
  • Evolutionary Center: Created a camp that was a showcase of how to live sustainably in community for a week at Burning Man

  • Organized and moderated a panel on "Why Sustainability is an Imperative in OD; the Choices We Make" SOS
  • Inspired event logistics planning committee to Shifting from hard copy to electronic copy whenever possible with registrations, exhibitor kits, more e-mail than snail mail, encourage recycling and re-using conference badges, etc
  • Worked with Hotel for sustainable choices with guests, menu, and cleaning... You Tidy, We Treat; hotel cleans linens and towels only per hotel guest's request
  • Sustainable and Locally sourced snacks highlighted with educational postcards placed in the
  • Travel options and support for public transit
  • Purchasing eco-friendly tote bags
  • Space Needle gala greening

 

Rothbury Festival:
40,000 people, 94% diversion of waste, 4 day outdoor camping festival
